Co-presented by the Ministry of Culture (MOC) and British Film Institute (BFI), “Myriad Voices: Reframing Taiwan New Cinema” will run at the BFI Southbank in London from Mar. 31 to Apr. 30.
Founded in 1933, BFI is the U.K.’s largest and the most significant film institute. This season will feature 15 films across 30 screenings, showcasing works by renowned directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Edward Yang (楊德昌), Wang Toon (王童), Wan Jen (萬仁), Chang Yi (張毅), Chen Kun-hou (陳坤厚), and Huang Yu-shan (黃玉珊).
Additionally, Chen Kun-hou and Huang Yu-shan will attend select screenings to share their insights on Taiwan New Cinema.
Curator Hyun Jin Cho noted that the Taiwan New Cinema movement was grounded in a collective spirit of creativity, playfulness, and humility. This season hopes to paint a fuller picture of this vibrant film movement and shift the spotlight towards lesser known but vital contributors, whose work helped shape this new cinematic expression, she added.
The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. highlighted that this collaboration with BFI marks a significant milestone and reflects their commitment to fostering cultural exchange by enhancing appreciation of Taiwanese cinema.
