Czech museum hosts exhibition featuring Taiwan Indigenous cultures

The National Taiwan Museum (NTM), in collaboration with the National Technical Museum of the Czech Republic, inaugurated the exhibition “Taiwan’s Heritage: Traditions and Techniques of the Indigenous Hunters and Seamen (獵人之徑.海人之道:台灣原住民族山林與海洋智慧)” on Apr. 15 in Prague. Running through Sept. 28, the exhibition showcases Taiwan’s Indigenous cultures to Czech audiences.

Exhibition highlights include a traditional fishing boat of the Tao people from Orchid Island, crafted by a team led by Tao writer Syaman Rapongan, and a traditional hunting hut built by Tsou hunter Mo’e Yasiyungu, both exemplifying the wisdom and craftsmanship of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples.

In the presence of over 100 attendees, NTM Director Chen Teng-chin (陳登欽) officially presented the Tao fishing boat to the Czech National Technical Museum, where it will become part of the museum’s permanent collection.

At the ceremony, Jiří Drahoš, Chief Deputy Speaker of the Czech Senate, remarked that the Taiwan-Czechia friendship is founded on mutual recognition and respect for each other’s cultural roots.

Demonstrating strong support for Taiwan-Czechia cultural collaboration, Karel Ksandr, General Director of the Czech National Technical Museum, invited Minister of Culture Li Yuan and Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung to deliver their speeches via prerecorded video messages. Minister Li described the exhibition as a first step for Czech audiences to explore Taiwan’s beautiful cultures, while Minister Lin expressed his hope that a broad range of overseas cultural initiatives would help foster global appreciation for Taiwan.

Ke Liang-ruey (柯良叡), Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague, emphasized that the exhibition is a meaningful milestone following the signing of a cooperation agreement between the two museums in 2022.
