Liverpool Bienniale 2025, one of the world’s most prominent contemporary visual art exhibition, will enjoy its official opening on 7th June. With the support from Cultural Division, Taipei Representative Office in the UK, Taiwan artist Chih-Chung Chang (張致中) will be invited to exhibit his work, alongside more than 30 groups of international artists from 25 other countries.

The 13th edition of Liverpool Biennial is curated by British curator Marie-Ann McQuay. With “Bedrock” as this year’s theme, it not only represents local geological features, but also represents the robust foundation of local civic values. This year’s biennial especially emphasizes the participation of public spaces, with the expectation of reflecting Liverpool’s role in past trans-Atlantic slave trades and colonial exploitation of natural resources from other countries by discussing the development of local recognition through the history of immigrant communities, and thus explore how historical developments have shaped the daily livelihood of Liverpool.

Port of Fata Morgana (海市), the work of artist Chih-Chung Chang, will be exhibited at Bluecoat, one of UK’s oldest contemporary visual art centre, and Pine Court. Originally conceived following Chang’s residency at Pier-2 Art Centre (駁二藝術特區), this work centred on a model ship from his childhood. With ship as a symbol and port as a metaphor, this work explores family histories, alongside the history of naval architecture and social movements around Kaohsiung Harbour. The curator believes that this work not only discusses the opposing phenomena of modern port development and natural disasters, but also discusses the strength of national authorities and civil disobedience. It analyses these issues from different perspectives, thus making it closely matched with this year’s theme, and believing that it shares parallels with the overall historical development of Liverpool that would resonate with local society.

Born in 1986 at Kaohsiung, Chang’s works combine multiple forms and media with keen craftsmanship, paying attention to those ever-changing environments of ships, islands, waters and ports, and exploring the universal experience, tension and grey areas between human, civilization and nature. His works are composed of forms such as digital images, installation, photography, painting, documents & archives, workshops and so on.

Founded in 1998, Liverpool Biennial is one of the most important global contemporary art exhibition and has gradually changed the urban features of Liverpool through public arts and community projects. The biennial has exhibited works of more than 560 international artists, while Taiwan artists such as Eleng Lululan (安聖惠), Jr-Shin Luo (羅智信), Yu-Cheng Chou (周育正), Yin-Ju Chen (陳瀅如), architect Ying-Chun Hiseh (謝英俊) and others were previously invited to the biennial.
