With the support from the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris, the Festival La Rochelle Cinéma (Fema) features a retrospective titled “The Cinema of Edward Yang,” which is taking place from June 27 to July 6. The program presents eight works directed by or featuring the late director Edward Yang (楊德昌) across 20 screenings.
Initiated by Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, the recent digital restoration of Edward Yang’s films marks a significant milestone in preserving cinematic history. Among the restored works, “Mahjong (麻將)” and “A Confucian Confusion (獨立時代)” are set to make their debut at Fema. Other included titles are: “Taipei Story (青梅竹馬),” “The Terrorizers (恐怖分子),” “A Brighter Summer Day (牯嶺街少年殺人事件),” “Yi Yi (一一),” “In Our Time (光陰的故事),” and “A Summer at Grandpa’s (冬冬的假期).”
Hu Ching-fang (胡晴舫), Director of the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris, noted that the Center’s previous collaboration with the festival in 2014 and 2015 garnered enthusiastic responses from attendees. She added that through this retrospective, the Center aims to introduce outstanding Taiwanese cinema to French audiences.
