Newly-restored version of the 1998 film 'Grandma and Her Ghosts' to be screened in the UK

Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh will hold a series of outdoor screenings of animated children's films in June and July, including a newly-restored version of the 1998 Taiwanese animated film "Grandma and Her Ghosts (魔法阿媽)" at Bridgend Farmhouse on July 9 as part of its summer special program.

This 80-minute film is considered one of the most classic animations from Taiwan. At home, it serves as a memory of a generation. While abroad, it conveys traditional Taiwanese culture through a heart-warming story. The film was recently restored with help from Taiwan Film and Audio Institute and returned to the cinemas in Taiwan last year.

"Grandma and Her Ghosts" tells the story of a young boy named Dou-Dou as he adjusts to life with his grandmother while his mother is away. While initially bored with his new surroundings, he discovers that his grandma is a supernatural expert who regularly contends with ghosts. Soon circumstances make it possible for Dou-Dou to see and interact with spirits, too, resulting in plenty of paranormal adventures as he meets spectres of various dispositions, including the gentle apparition of a young girl.

Several films that were screened previously include "Girl in Water (水中的女孩)," "Revolution in Our Times (時代革命)," "The Price of Democracy (狂飆一夢)," "Among Us (地球迷航)," "Le Moulin (日曜日式散步者)," and others.

The Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh has returned for a third year with an expanded program that will screen around 20 Taiwanese films at locations across Scotland, under the theme of "The (Un)usual." The festival officially kicked off on March 25 and will run through November. The last portion of the festival will consist of a week-long screening schedule at major Edinburgh cinemas in October, as well as in Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Fort William in November.
