Munich Comic Festival to spotlight Taiwan as guest of honor

Four Taiwanese comic artists will greet readers from June 20 to 23 at the Munich Comic Festival, where Taiwan will serve as the 2019 guest of honor.

Jimmy Liao (幾米) is a prolific illustrator and author whose works are celebrated for their expressive and heart-warming imagery. His career began with drawing for children, but the universality of his simple messages has captured the imagination of adult readers around the world.

Sean Chuang (莊永新) is a prolific commercial director who became a published graphic artist by turning his experience in Taiwan's advertising industry into comic strips. His acclaimed works include "The Window ()" and "80's Diary in Taiwan (80年代事件簿)."

61Chi (劉宜其) is an accomplished artist who was selected by the 2016-2017 residency program at la Maison des Auteurs in the French region of Angouleme, host city of the Angouleme International Comics Festival. The 31-year-old published her own calendars, messenger bags, and washi tape rolls before coming to fame.

Aho Huang (黃健和), editor-in-chief of Dala Publishing (大辣出版), is a connoisseur of comics and a leading authority on Taiwan’s late artist Chen Uen (鄭問). He has been focused on promoting cross-sector ventures for Taiwanese comics in recent years, particularly through the employment of new technology, while respecting the spirit of the original work.

The Taiwan booth at the 2019 Munich Comic Festival, which is made possible with the support of proprietor of Chinabooks Elisabeth Wolf, will also host British author-curator Paul Gravett, who will help lead several forums and live demonstrations featuring the four artists from Taiwan.
