Taiwan new media artists to perform at Germany’s Kunstfest Weimar

Four Taiwanese new media artists will hold a joint showcase at art festival Kunstfest Weimar 2019 that is taking place from Aug. 21 through Sept. 7 in central Germany. Their installations will be accompanied by a panel and three live performances.

Titled "Light Inderdiction," the Taiwanese showcase will present four installations at Weimar that highlight the innovative power and relevance of Taiwan's current art and performance scene. The selection is curated by Wang Chun-chi (王俊琪), a Berlin-based Taiwanese researcher and founder of the interdisciplinary nonprofit Idolon studio (Union of European Asian Artists).

The first piece "E-Werk Weimar No. 1" by artist Tao Ya-lun (陶亞倫) confronts the viewer with an unsettling 3D borderline experience. His works often feature diverse forms which can range from video, sound, and kinetic installations to light shows and shadow play. Most of his pieces are based on virtual reality and adapted to the specific venue where they are presented.

Fujui Wang's (王福瑞) sound installation "Hollow Noise" is comprised of several directional loud speakers which produce carefully focused ultrasonic waves. His method creates the impression of a sonic wind blowing from various directions. The result is an absolutely new and surprising acoustic experience.

On the stage of the E-Werk, Wu Chi-tsung (吳季璁) shall present the European premiere of his light installation "DUST." By means of optical tricks, the artist reflects normal ambient dust through the light of a projector, thereby making it visible to the naked eye, and the air in the room suddenly gains a structure of its own.

The performance in Wu's production is the work of Taipei-Paris artist, performer, and musician Liping Ting (丁麗萍). "Poésie d'action" will also be on display for Ting to describe her multidisciplinary approach. She will enliven the installation environment in the two halls of the E-Werk with a three-hour-long performance.

Tao, Wang, Wu, and Ting will also hold three joint performances featuring light, sound, and the human body on Sept. 5, 6, and 7 before joining the "All Together Now: Performance and Cooperation" panel moderated by Kunstfest Weimar Artistic Director Rolf C. Hemke and curator Wang on Sept. 7.
