Spain festival holds Tsai Ming-liang film retrospective

A total of 13 cinematic pieces by Taiwan-based Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮) will be screened at Cine Doré, a historic theater in Madrid, Spain from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, as part of Spain Moving Images Festival, an event that celebrates audiovisual works from Asia.

Offering a special retrospective of the award-winning filmmaker, the festival showcases Tsai's works from the past three decades, including his earliest TV film "All the Corners of the World (1989)," "What Time is it There? (2001)," "Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003)," "Stray Dogs (2013)," "Your Face (2018)," his latest work "Days (2020)," and more.

In addition to the screenings, the renowned director and his go-to actor Lee Kang-sheng (李康生) will partake in the festival with a pre-recorded video shedding light on Tsai’s films via Madrid-based social and cultural center La Casa Encendida’s Youtube channel.

While a master class by the duo will also be available through the platform from Oct. 3 to 10, and a book launch event celebrating the publication of "Tsai Ming-Liang" – a study of Tsai’s cinematographic and artistic career – will take place on Oct. 8.

To be hosted by the book's authors – Asian cinema expert Susana Sanz and film critic Jesús Palacios, the event will not only take place at cinemas-themed bookstore Ocho y Medio Libros de Cine in Madrid, but also be livestreamed via the festival's Instagram.
