Chinese/Taiwanese workshop at British Centre for Literary Translation Summer School

The Cultural Division of Taipei Representative Office in the UK and the National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL) will cooperate with the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) to help bring the charm of Taiwanese literature to international audiences. Through the support of the Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, this year’s BCLT Summer School will feature a series of online workshops and lectures for translators of Taiwanese Mandarin literature.

Five international translators and five Taiwanese translators have been selected, and they will be eligible for financial assistance from the MOC, with participation being free of charge.

The workshop will invite Singaporean writer and translator Jeremy Tiang (程異), who has had extensive experience in translating Chinese works into English, to serve as the instructor.

The works of Professor Chi Ta-wei (紀大偉), a Taiwanese writer and scholar, will be used as source material. The instructor will select fragments of his work and lead the students to complete the English translation, and discuss with the participating translators the ways in which to interpret the original text from different angles in hope of improving the translators’ professional capabilities.

In addition to participating in the one-week online intensive practical translation course, approximately 70 to 80 translators will participate in creative writing, general translation courses, special lectures, translator exchanges, and group networking courses arranged by BCLT to help expand translators’ perspectives in the industry.

BCLT is Britain’s leading research center for the study and support of literary translation within the School of Literature, Drama, and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.
