Zurich's Filmpodium to screen 20 iconic Taiwanese films

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany and the Swiss tba Film Collective will jointly launch the Taiwan-themed film exhibition "Taiwan Cinema" to screen 20 iconic Taiwanese films at the Filmpodium in Zurich for over 70 times between July 3 to September 16.

Works by internationally renowned directors such as Edward Yang's (楊德昌) "In Our Time (光陰的故事)," Hou Hsiao-hsien's (侯孝賢) "A City of Sadness (悲情城市)," Ang Lee's "Pushing Hands (推手)" as well as "Vengeance of the Phoenix Sisters (三鳳震武林)," "Siao Yu (少女小漁)," "The Legend of The Sacred Stone (聖石傳說)," and "Goodbye, Dragon Inn (不散)" will be screened.

In addition to the films, "Taiwan Cinema" will present three special discussion forums. The opening forum on July 3 will feature tba Film Collective’s curator Lorenzo Berardelli and scholars from the University of Zurich Dr. Simona Grano and Dr. Nathalie Böhler, the film "Time Story (光陰的故事)" will also be screened at the forum. On August 29, Filmpodium will screen "Secret Love for the Peach Blossom Spring (暗戀桃花源)," followed by a discussion with director Stan Lai (賴聲川). Chen Singing (陳芯宜) who directed "God Man Dog (流浪神狗人)" will be invited to a discussion on September 5.

Housed on the premises of the Studio 4 cinema, built in 1949, the Filmpodium has been showing themed series, retrospectives of classics, premieres of unconventional author’s films, and movies featuring live music since 1983, screening approximately 350 films each year, which is more than the sum of all Zurich commercial cinemas. For the Taiwan-themed film event to be held at the local landmark is of special significance.

This time, the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (國家電影及視聽文化中心), which is dedicated to the promotion of Taiwan’s audiovisual assets through research, collection, and restoration, also collaborated in organizing the festival.
