Three bright Taiwanese composers will be joining the 2016 Mise-En Music Festival, a four-day festival devoted to contemporary and ensemble music running from June 22 through 25 in Manhattan.
The young artists - Lily Chen (陳立立), Lo Shih-wei (羅仕偉), and Chao Tai-kuang (趙泰廣) - are respectively studying at the University of California, Berkeley as a Ph.D candidate in music composition; Columbia University as a Dean's Fellow in composition; and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Ph.D candidate in composition-theory.
Chen is known for her exploration of timbral potential in both acoustic and electronic music, while Lo looks to transfigure literary and political elements into music. Chao, on the other hand, seeks collaborative presentations involving dance, lighting, and costume design.
Their works are among the 31 selected scores in this year's open call that received 792 submissions from around the world. The scores are specifically written for the Mise-En Festival, in which close engagement during the composer-performer community event is expected to give rise to further collaborations.
