Marionettes to usher in Year of the Monkey in Canada

Taiwan's Chin Fei Feng Marionette Theatre Troupe (錦飛鳳傀儡戲劇團) will tour Canada as part of an annual Chinese New Year gala that started as a Vancouver Winter Olympics Legacy event.

Chin Fei Feng belongs to the Quanzhou School of string puppetry, which is known for its use of round-figured and delicate puppets. Each marionette is controlled with fourteen strings, enabling the performers to master a wide array of different characters ranging from lions and warriors to horseback riders and acrobats.

LunarFest was established in 2009 as the cultural legacy of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In its bid to enhance national pride, inclusion, and unity, LunarFest has now become Canada's premier presenter of contemporary expression in Asian arts and culture.

As part of LunarFest's elite roster for 2016, Chin Fei Feng will travel to Vancouver, Toronto, and Courtenay and perform on stage alongside nimble marionettes to present "Lantern Festival,” "Lion Dancing,” "Ball Boy,” "The Swing,” "God of Fortune, and "The Reunion.”

In celebration of the upcoming Year of the Monkey, the themed exhibition of the 2016 LunarFest will also feature up to 400 sculptures and installations made in the image of the legendary Monkey King — the infamous Sun Wukong (孫悟空) and his 72 tricks from the classic Chinese epic "Journey to the West (西遊記).”
