The New York Asian Film Festival, one of North America's leading festivals of popular Asian cinema, has selected four films from Taiwan for its 2015 lineup: "Meeting Dr. Sun (行動代號孫中山),” "Café. Waiting. Love (等一個人咖啡), ” "Second Chance (逆轉勝),” and "Partners in Crime (共犯). ”
"Meeting Dr. Sun,” a dead-pan heist comedy about two high school students driven to desperation by poverty, will have its U.S. premiere on June 30. Award-winning director Yee Chih-yen (易智言) will also attend the screening to meet filmgoers at the Walter Reade Theatre.
Based on a book of the same name, "Café. Waiting. Love” remains true to the zany romanticism of novelist Giddens Ko (九把刀). Showing on July 9, the romantic comedy zaps through unrequited desires for love, living abroad, and hot sausages, and brings to life an electrifying chemistry between two strangers at the titular café.
Starring Mayday guitarist Wen Shang-yi (溫尚翊), "Second Chance” brings Taiwanese flavor to the classic underdog story on July 11, in which a washed-up billiards champion teams up with a younger player to defeat the overwhelming odds.
Also slated for July 11, "Partners in Crime” steps into the realm of suspended disbelief, dropping the audience into a high school set inexplicably in the middle of a steaming jungle as three misfits attempt to justify the actions of their recently deceased classmate.
The 14th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival will be attended by 18 international filmmakers and celebrity guests, including Hong Kong actor Aaron Kwok (郭富城) and Taiwanese director Yee. The four films from Taiwan will be screened as part of a special segment titled "Taiwan Cinema Now!”
