Art Bank Taiwan collection to be showcased in Maryland

To help Taiwan's contemporary arts gain exposure, Art Bank Taiwan has curated a contemporary art exhibition running from Aug. 1 through Nov. 30 at the TECRO Cultural Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, and Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the US, Art Bank Taiwan has selected 10 pieces of artworks by 3 Taiwanese contemporary artists. Together, they will showcase different perspectives and truths on life in the past, present, and future under the influence of globalization.

Tu Pei-shih (杜珮詩), who holds an MA degree from Goldsmiths' College, portrays confrontation and absurdities through fictional narratives. Her featured works include "Good Luck (祝好運)," "Fortune is Fun (命運好好玩)," "Santa Brings Joy to Everyone (聖誕老人將歡樂帶給每一個人)," and "Nuclear World (核能世界)."

Specializing in the projection of drawings and animations that imitate rare visual experiences, Cheng Teng-yuan (張騰遠) incorporates his works with elements from everyday life, as seen in the chosen works "Earth Style — Playground (地球風遊樂器材)," "Earth Style — Cushion (地球抱枕)," and "Unknown Mouse (某種鼠類)."

Based on his own fluctuating self-image and mental states, Liao Yu-an (廖堉安) delineates the lifestyle of urbanites and their interactions with comics and pop art. Three of his works — "Distracted Life Journal No.2 (不專心生活誌No.2)," "Failed Strike (失敗的壁咚)," and "Absurd Consultations (協商二重奏)" — will be displayed at the exhibition.

Art Bank Taiwan noted that the "What Do You See?" exhibition aims to challenge the viewer's perception of reality through the works of the three aforementioned artists. By interpreting the visible and invisible conventions of authenticity, viewers will become more grounded in the real world.
