The Retrospective of Taiwan Director Tsai Ming-liang in 2021 FICUNAM

To show appreciation for Taiwan's outstanding films, "FICUNAM," the International Film Festival of the National Autonomous University of México, dedicated a special retrospective program on Taiwan's influential director Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮), presenting 16 of his films from Mar. 18 through Mar. 24.

With the support from Taiwan's Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles co-presents "the Retrospective of Tsai Ming-liang" with FICUNAM at its 11th edition. The retrospective will present 11 feature films, including his latest work "Days (日子)," his internationally recognized works "Vive l'Amour (愛情萬歲)," "Stray Dogs (郊遊)," "The Hole (洞)," "The River (河流)," debut feature "Rebels of the Neon God (青少年哪吒)," and another five medium-length films including "The Skywalk Is Gone (天橋不見了)," to name a few. All the 16 films will be available on-demand in Mexico through the MUBI platform.

Born in Malaysia and based in Taiwan, Tsai has devoted nearly thirty years to filmmaking and has become a leading filmmaker of contemporary Chinese-language cinema. The retrospective at FICUNAM this year centers on the poetic spirits driven by Tsai's works through commitment of human body.

Another highlight at the retrospective is a series of events to extend the far-reaching cultural impact of Tsai's works to audiences in Mexico. One is the Master Class, a conversation about Tsai's career and his way of conceiving cinema. The other is the Workshop via Zoom targeting film-related students in Mexico. Moreover, a monographic publication that covers different aspects of Tsai's works from the perception of six notable filmmakers, film critics, and programmers of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will be published both in English and Spanish.

Founded in 2011 as a festival dedicated to bringing the films that are hardly accessible to Mexico, FICUNAM is a platform for the exhibition, analysis and discussion of auteur cinema aimed at opening a space for appreciation and reflection.
