The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York is set to host the “MAD About Jewelry 2024” pop-up event from May 4 to 8, featuring Taiwanese artists Amal Chao Yung-huei (趙永惠), Hsieh Min-ling (謝旻玲), and Chiu Hui-yu (邱惠愉).
“MAD About Jewelry” is MAD’s annual benefit awards celebration and sale of contemporary jewelry. Featuring designs from 50 emerging and acclaimed international jewelry artists, MAD About Jewelry has become known as the ultimate pop-up shop for contemporary, artist-made jewelry.
Amal Chao lives and works in Tainan, Taiwan. For her current series, she works primarily in corrugated iron, a roofing material that is strong and durable yet also lightweight and portable.
A Taiwanese artist based in Taipei, Hsieh Min-ling majored in sculpture and later studied contemporary jewelry in Germany. Her jewelry conveys Eastern philosophical thought, including the philosophy of nonexistence, through its lightness, stark forms, and relationship to the space around it.
France-based Taiwanese artist Chiu Hui-yu finds inspiration in the continuous cycles of nature: germination and growth, blooming and wilting, fruiting and rebirth. She makes jewelry using silk paper and silver, to which she applies classic metalsmithing techniques.
