‘Edward Yang’s Taipei Stories’ screening event to be held in Toronto

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), set to take place from July 4 to 30, will host the screening event “Edward Yang’s Taipei Stories (楊德昌的臺北故事).” This event invites cinephiles in Toronto to experience late 20th-century Taipei, a city undergoing rapid modernization and facing a clash of generations, through the perspective of the late director Edward Yang.

Collaborating with the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, TIFF will feature seven of Edward Yang’s films and one short film, which will be presented in three sections: the urban trilogy – “That Day, on the Beach (海灘的一天),” “Taipei Story (青梅竹馬),” and “The Terrorizers (恐怖份子)”; novelistic works – “Expectations (指望),” “A Brighter Summer Day (牯嶺街少年殺人事件),” and “Yi Yi (一一)”; and social satires – “A Confucian Confusion (獨立時代)” and “Mahjong (麻將).”

TIFF is one of the most important film festivals in North America, dedicated to presenting the best of international and Canadian cinema and creating transformational experiences for film lovers and creators of all ages and backgrounds.

Edward Yang was one of the most prominent filmmakers in the Taiwanese New Wave movement of the 1980s. This comprehensive retrospective of Yang’s work demonstrates his lasting influence
