The Taiwan Academy of the Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles and the American Cinematheque will co-hold the “Tsai Ming-Liang: An American Cinematheque Retrospective” from July 31 to Aug. 17, showcasing the works of Malaysian-Taiwanese film director Tsai Ming-liang in Los Angeles.
The event will feature 14 films, such as “Vive l’amour (愛情萬歲),” “I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone (黑眼圈),” “Goodbye, Dragon Inn (不散),” and “Abiding Nowhere (無所住).” It celebrates Tsai’s incomparable career as one of the leading figures in the “Second New Wave” of Taiwanese cinema. Tsai’s work exudes an unparalleled beauty, as his camera lingers in and around the quiet corners of urban cities, forming enigmatic character studies in the lonely existence of his many alienated subjects.
The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles noted that this event is made possible by the Spotlight Taiwan grant from the Ministry of Culture. Additionally, the Academy has invited the director and actors Lee Kang-sheng (李康生) and Anong Houngheuangsy (亞儂.弘尚希) to participate in Q&A sessions.
