With the support of Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will present two Taiwanese films, “Daughter’s Daughter (女兒的女兒)” and “Dead Talents Society (鬼才之道),” in its Official Selection from Sep. 5 to 15.
“Daughter’s Daughter,” directed by Huang Xi (黃熙), stars screen legend Sylvia Chang (張艾嘉) as a woman forced to decide the fate of her recently deceased daughter’s embryo. It “confirms the young writer-director’s status as the bold new voice in Taiwanese cinema,” as described on TIFF’s online introduction.
“Dead Talents Society,” directed by John Hsu (徐漢強), is about a meek and newly dead teen learning how to haunt the living. This bloody and hilarious supernatural comedy peer beyond the veil into the secret netherworld of professional spectres as they compete in terrorizing the living to ensure their liminal lifestyle.
The TIFF is the largest public film festival in the world, with over 667,000 attendees and generating over 55 million impressions at TIFF 2023. With a diverse lineup of over 270 films from 70+ territories, TIFF captures a global audience and serves as a significant platform for cinema.
