New York’s cinema to present films shot by Taiwanese cinematographer

Organized by Metrograph and supported by Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the festival “Daring Motion: The Films of Mark Lee Ping-bing” will feature 12 films photographed by Lee from Sept. 6 to 30. Lee will meet the audience in New York for the opening of the festival from Sept. 6 to 8.

Mark Lee Ping-bing (李屏賓) is a critically acclaimed Taiwanese cinematographer whose unique perspective in cinematography has been praised and appreciated by many directors. The retrospective celebrates Lee’s partnership with Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) by showcasing “A Time to Live, a Time to Die (童年往事),” “Flowers of Shanghai (海上花),” and more. Additionally, Lee’s collaborations with director Gilles Bourdos, Hirokazu Kore-eda (是枝裕和), Trần Anh Hùng, and Wang Toon (王童) will be presented to show his profound impact on the global cinematic landscape.

“The Great Buddha+ (大佛普拉斯)” directed by Huang Hsin-yao (黃信堯) was selected for New Taiwanese Voices section of the festival. This slate is curated by Lee to show his new curatorship talent. This Golden Horse Award-winning film made its NY premiere at New Directors/New Films Festival in 2018.
