The Taipei Cultural Center in New York (TCCNY), in collaboration with the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), will host the New York premiere of the documentary “Park (Taman-taman)” at the First Look Festival on Mar. 13. Director So Yo-hen (蘇育賢) will join the post-screening discussion.
The 14th First Look Festival, running from Mar. 12 to 16, features 38 films from 21 countries at MoMI. “Park” is the second Taiwanese film selected for the festival since “Nina Wu (灼人秘密)” five years ago.
“Park” follows Indonesian immigrants Asri and Hasan, who convene at a bench every day at twilight hour in Tainan Park, in the heart of Taiwan’s oldest city, to share the day’s news and experiences, spinning second-hand tales of migrant struggle into rhapsodically spontaneous verse. So’s film traces an aleatory path through the documentary form, achieving a fabulous mode simultaneously predicated on the prosaic and transfigured by the poetic.
TCCNY emphasized that First Look is one of MoMI’s most significant annual film events, highlighting international works that push the boundaries of cinematic expression. The center also noted that the selection of “Park” reflects growing international recognition of Taiwan’s filmmaking industry.
