Organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), Taiwan Expo USA 2022 will open from Oct. 12 to 14 at Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C.. The General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC) will present Taiwan’s folk culture under the theme "Taiwan Fusion."
This is the first time Taiwan Expo is held in the world's largest consumer market, the United States. With ten exhibition sectors and a series of forums, Taiwan Expo USA aims to showcase the best of Taiwan and promote exchanges between Taiwan and the United States.
The cultural section of the Taiwan Expo USA is planned and designed by GACC. Using the traditional style of the Chinese temple gateway, GACC integrates traditional and modern cultural elements of Taiwan by exhibiting two door gods that are 270cm in height at the entrance of the pavilion. Other exhibits include glove puppets of the Pili Puppet Show's main character Su Huan-jen (素還真); a traditional Chinese opera mask that demonstrates Guan Jiang Shou (官將首)'s facial makeup by Lei Sheng Art Group; banners of the Baishatun Gongtian Temple (白沙屯拱天宮) that represent the start of a pilgrimage; handmade drums by veteran drum makers; musical instruments of the Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera (唐美雲歌仔戲團); and hand-painted lanterns that are specially designed for the event will be displayed to introduce Taiwanese temple culture to Americans.
The exhibition will also showcase Taiwan's diverse cultures through recordings of performances by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, HRC Dance Studio, Wind and Fire Generals, Pili glove puppetry, Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera, as well as the Pakelang ritual of the Indigenous Amis tribe.
