In celebration of the release of her 4th album “Liberated Gesture (自由的姿態),” New York-based Taiwanese vibraphonist Yuhan Su (蘇郁涵) will hold a concert in the Big Apple on Nov. 8.
The concert repertoire includes a suite inspired by German-French abstract painter Hans Hartung and also a song combining with poetry for women who stand for their own unique voice. The Yuhan Su Quintet will feature a group of masterful improvisers with Matt Mitchell on piano, Caroline Davis on saxophone/poetry reading, Marty Kenney on bass, and Dan Weiss on drums.
The jazz album “Liberated Gesture” was performed by the Yuhan Su Quintet and recorded in New York. The visual design of the album cover is a collaboration by many outstanding Taiwanese artists, including artist Hu Nung-hsin (胡農欣), photographer Huang Kuo-heng (黃國恆), and dancer Tang Hsiao-jou (唐曉柔). During the stage of the album production, Su received a subsidy from the National Arts Association, as well as sponsorship from Pathway to Jazz and New Music USA.
As Downbeat Magazine praised her for her music “like the best fiction, it’s entirely enveloping,” Su is the recent nominee for the DownBeat Critics Poll in the category “Rising Star” of Vibraphone. Her previous three albums, including City Animals (2018, Sunnyside Record), A Room of One’s Own (2015, Inner Circle Music) and Flying Alone (2012, Inner Circle Music), have received widespread approval and numerous music awards and nominations, such as “Best Jazz Album of the Year,” “Best New Artist,” “Best Jazz Single,” and “Best Instrumentalist Award” from the Golden Indie Music Award; “Best Performance Album of the year” and “Best Composer Award” from the Golden Melody Award in Taiwan; and “Best Release of the Year” from All about Jazz and Downbeat.
