Washington, DC exhibition to spotlight women artists from Taiwan

Six women artists striving towards constructions of female subjectivity will take the center stage of a new media art exhibition titled "Being Here as ME" and running from June 15 through Aug. 11 at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington, DC.

Curated by Tseng Yu-chuan (曾鈺涓), a Taiwanese artist researching interactive and web-based digital art, the two-month exhibition hopes to bring attention to the diverse mediums and methods employed by featured artists Tu Pei-shih (杜佩詩), Wu Tzu-ning (吳梓寧), Wu Yung-chieh (吳詠潔), Lin Pey-chwen (林珮淳), Chen I-chun (陳依純), and Kuo Hui-chan (郭慧禪).

Tseng explains that their art transcends gender discussions. Rather, through social strategies for action and engagement, the six artists are revealing their anxiety and personal opinions on the contemporary ecology of society, science, technology, and the natural environment.

"Being Here as ME" will greet Washingtonian exhibitiongoers with an opening reception on June 15 at 6pm, followed by a gallery talk the next day at noon.

Both events will be free and open to the public, with those interested in hearing from curator Tseng and artists Lin, Tu, and Wu Tzu-ning and their use of new media to question societal norms asked to RSVP to help the organizers budget for the light lunch that will accompany the June 17 talk.

The exhibition will be hosted by the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in DC, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the US (TECRO).
