New York Asian Film Festival to screen six Taiwanese films

Six Taiwanese films will be featured at the 20th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), running from August 6 to 22. The lineup includes "City of Lost Things (廢棄之城)," "The Silent Forest (無聲)," "A Leg (腿)," "As We Like it (揭大歡喜)," "My Missing Valentine (消失的情人節)" and "Piglet Piglet (美豬肉圓)."

This festival, with its largest film lineup to date, will screen over 60 films from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea, both virtually and in-person, at Lincoln Center, America.

The 3D drama "City of Lost Things," by director Yee Chih-yen (易智言), is the only animated film on the list and has been shortlisted in the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film Competition. The film describes an odd chain of events whisks a wandering teenager Leaf into another world populated by pieces of junk.

NYAFF’s poster has been drawn from Ko Chen-nien(柯貞年)'s "The Silent Forest." This film is based on the real sexual assault case and explores the issues of unequal rights and self-identification in society.

The dark comedy "A Leg," by director Chang Yao-sheng (張耀升), describes a desperate woman who deals with her husband's dead body, leading her through multiple encounters with bureaucracy, ineptitude, and her own recent past.

"As We Like it," by Chen Hong-yi (陳宏一) and Muni Wei (魏瑛娟), is a queer reworking of Shakespeare's play, telling of the love blossoming between Orlando and Rosalind, who is disguised as a man.

The romantic comedy "My Missing Valentine," directed by Chen Yu-hsun (陳玉勳), leads the audiences to think about the events in life that are easily overlooked.

Launched in 2002, NYAFF is hosted by the New York Asian Film Foundation and known as the most popular Asian film festival in North America. This year, selected films will be grouped thematically, in sections tagged Beyond Borders, Crowd Pleasers, Frontlines, Genre Masters, Next/Now, Standouts and Vanguards.
