The University of Arizona launches 'Photography and Taiwan: History and Practice' online symposium

The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA), the University of Arizona's School of the Arts (SAUA), and the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) are collaborating for the first time on the "Spotlight Taiwan project" to hold the "Photography and Taiwan: History and Practice" online symposium from April 7 to 9.

19 scholars and experts from Korea, the United States, Australia and Taiwan are invited to attend the symposium. They will help the audience understand more about the history, culture and democratization of Taiwan through a historical lens and scholarly debate as recorded in the photography.

This symposium is TECO-LA's first collaboration with the University of Arizona. Professor Liao Hsin-tien (廖新田) of the National Taiwan University of Arts will begin the symposium with a lecture on "The History of Photography in Taiwan." Three special sessions will be held, including the introduction of the National Center for Photography and Image presented by the convener Tsai Chao-yi (蔡昭儀), the Taiwanese Photography Magazines and Books presented by Lee Wei-I (李威儀) and Tsao Liang-pin (曹良賓), and the Photographer presented by Lin Hongjohn (林宏璋), Lulu Shur-Tzy Hou (侯淑姿) and Chang Chien-chi (張乾琦). Two panels include: "Taiwan Photography Then & Now," with Jeehey Kim (金芝潓), Paul Barclay, Mia Yinxing Liu, Joseph Allen and Ellen Y. Chang, and "Taiwanese Photography in Global Scene," with Meg Jackson Fox, Shuxia Chen, Jeehey Kim, Olivier Krischer and Chen Chia-chi (陳佳琦). The final roundtable will have Jeehey Kim, Abby Chen (陳暢) and Albert J. L. Huang (黃建亮) to share their perspectives.

Initiated by the Ministry of Culture in 2013, the Spotlight Taiwan Project seeks to establish long-term relationships with global professional art and culture organizations, including leading universities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium will be held virtually on Zoom with simultaneous interpreting in both English and Chinese.
