Taiwanese artworks on display at Frieze New York 2022

After a tumultuous year of an ongoing global pandemic, Frieze New York returns to The Shed from May 18 to 22. The fair brings together over 65 of the most significant contemporary art galleries from New York, the US, and around the world, alongside a rich program featuring special projects and talks. Taiwan's Tina Keng Gallery will present works by artists Ava Hsueh (薛保瑕), Yao Jui-chung (姚瑞中), Su Meng-Hung (蘇孟鴻) and others.

Their diverse body of work showcases contemporary artistic explorations by Greater Chinese artists in deconstructing and reconstructing traditional cultural symbolism. Unraveling the strata of history and the symbolism of artistic media, their works grapple with two-dimensional imagery and abstract space. The spirit of the brush and ink, and Eastern philosophies that permeate the practices of these artists respond to the transcultural context of contemporary art through a gaze at the culture that birthed and cradled their artistic intuition.

Hsueh has long chosen abstract language as her artistic expression. In dexterously conjuring biomorphic abstraction and geometric abstraction, she creates a hybrid reality that corresponds to epochal shifts in contemporary abstract art. Yao specializes in photography, installation, and painting. The themes of his works are varied, but they all examine the absurdity of the human condition.

Su works across mediums such as painting, silkscreen print, installation, and sculpture, in an attempt to transform traditional Chinese imagery into a visual vocabulary of grandiose icons.

Frieze New York is a leading international art fair that launched in 2012. It brings together the world’s leading galleries to showcase ambitious solo, group and themed presentations by pioneering artists and offers the opportunity to not only discover up-and-coming talent but also engage with some of art history’s most important figures.
