The film “A Journey in Spring (春行)” co-directed by Wang Ping-wen (王品文) and Peng Tzu-hu (彭紫惠) was selected in the lineup of the 43rd New Directors/New Films Festival in New York. Marking the first selection of a Taiwanese film in six years, the directing duo was invited to the festival for the premiere on Apr. 13 and 14 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Film at Lincoln Center respectively.
For more than half a century, the New Directors/New Films Festival has celebrated filmmakers who speak to the present and anticipate the future of cinema, and whose bold work pushes the envelope in unexpected, striking ways. This year’s selection introduced 25 features and 10 shorts, including one world premiere, 14 North American premieres, four U.S. premieres, and 16 New York premieres.
“A Journey in Spring” tells a story where an aging married couple share a modest home perched high in the wooded hills outside Taipei, where they bicker, gripe, and commiserate, inhabiting the familiar rhythms of a well-trod daily routine—until a sudden death throws their world into a state of muted disarray and brings the abrupt return of their estranged son.
