The Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (雲門舞集) has launched a North American tour on Oct. 26, and is set to perform “13 Tongues (十三聲)” and “Lunar Halo (毛月亮)” in 9 cities across the United States and Canada until Nov. 30.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture and its overseas offices in the U.S. and Canada, this tour marks Cloud Gate’s 20th North American tour since 1979, as well as its first North American tour since 2022. The company will be performing “13 Tongues” in Ann Arbor, Blacksburg, Santa Barbara, Davis, Pittsburgh, Santa Fe, Denver, and Banff, while debuting “Lunar Halo” in Montreal.

Commissioned by the National Theater and Concert Hall, “13 Tongues” premiered at the 2016 Taiwan International Festival of Arts, and has since been performed over 100 times domestically and internationally. The work draws inspiration from the street life of Monga (艋舺)—Taipei’s oldest district— in the 1960s, mixing into the performance Taiwanese cultural memories such as temple chants, night market sounds, and the folk songs of Hengchun (恆春)—a township located in southern Taiwan.

Choreographed by Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Cheng Tsung-lung (鄭宗龍) and co-produced by the National Performing Arts Center in 2019, “Lunar Halo” utilizes LED screens and lighting to create a wild and eerie atmosphere, with the dancers’ bodies, emphasized by tight-fitting costumes, forming a beautiful yet unsettling microcosm.
