Taiwanese sculptor selected for TAA 2025 residency program in New York

The Taipei Cultural Center (TCC) in New York, in collaboration with the Triangle Arts Association (TAA), has announced that sculptor Cheng I-hsin (鄭宜欣) has been selected for a three-month residency program at TAA in New York, scheduled to begin in March 2025.

Currently pursuing her master’s degree in Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts, Cheng’s works explore themes of cultural identity, sense of belonging, and memory. Her creations frequently incorporate printmaking, emphasizing the construction and expression of identity. Her recent research focuses on corporeality, blending Eastern philosophy with symbols derived from calligraphy and engaging in cross-cultural dialogue.

Cheng has been recognized with the Lih Pao Sculpture Biennial Awards in both 2020 and 2022. She has also held solo exhibitions at the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology Arts Center and the National Taiwan University Library.

During her residency, Cheng plans to center her exploration on the pictorial element of Chinese characters, examining their meanings within a globalized and multicultural context. She will integrate these symbols with Western artistic techniques, showcasing her reflections through sculptors, installations, and performances.

Established in 1982, TAA is dedicated to providing residency opportunities to artists from around the world, fostering collaborations with local art communities and curators, and broadening artists’ creative horizons. Since 2019, with support from the Ministry of Culture, the TCC has partnered with TAA to bring outstanding Taiwanese artists to New York.

The TCC expressed confidence that Cheng’s participation in the program will introduce fresh perspectives on Eastern art while promoting cross-cultural artistic exchange.
