First Taiwanese textile artist to hold solo exhibition at Centre Materia in Canada

Taiwanese textile artist Tseng Yen-yu (曾嬿圩)’s solo exhibition "L'art de la mémoire par le textile" will be held at Centre Materia and Centre d'art La Sarre to promote Taiwan's weaving craftsmanship in Canada between Sep. 16 and Dec. 4.

As a Taiwanese contemporary textile artist, Tseng has participated in international textile art biennials and artist-in-residence programs around the globe. She usually sculpts fabrics with her self-invented wrapping techniques to express her thoughts and observations of people and the environment. Combining traditional weaving craftsmanship and technology devices, the eight artworks that will be displayed in Tseng's first solo exhibition include computer embroidery, jacquard tapestry, and dobby-weave checkerboard, among others.

During Tseng's art residency at Maison des Metiers d'Art de Québec (MMAQ), she created a collection of tapestries utilizing the jacquard at school. The artist tries to portray how it would be like if women from the east and the west met in ancient times, rethinking the role of weaving and women in the past and modern times.

Tseng expressed gratitude for the support from the National Culture and Arts Foundation, the Department of Cultural Affairs of Taipei City Government, the city council of Québec, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), and Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC). Centre Materia is an artist-run centre that contributes to the dissemination of fine crafts while promoting artistic research and creativity, and for the first time, it organizes an exhibition of an Asian female artist in hope of strengthening Canada's relationship with Taiwan.

Tseng’s solo exhibition "L'art de la mémoire par le textile" will be opened at Centre Materia from Sep. 16 through Oct. 16, and at Centre d'art La Sarre from Oct. 28 through Dec. 4.
