NMP showcases Taiwanese Indigenous artists at Guam Micronesia Island Fair

With support from the Ministry of Culture, the National Museum of Prehistory (NMP) participated in the Guam Micronesia Island Fair (GMIF) on June 7 and 8 as part of an Austronesian cultural exchange program. The NMP brought along Indigenous cultural representatives, including the Taiwan Amis Polyphonic Youth Band (阿美族複音青春歌隊), the Wind Voyagers of Changbin (長濱船團), artists Iyo Kacaw and Nakaw Putun, among others, aiming to foster connections among diverse communities through cultural dialogue.

The program centered on cultural regeneration and resilience, exploring themes of navigation, ecology, music, and language. Its primary goal is to strengthen ties between Taiwan and Pacific Island nations.

Elaine Pangelinan, the marketing manager at the Guam Visitors Bureau, warmly welcomed the NMP and the invited artists, noting that the Taiwanese performers not only enriched the GMIF but also offered international visitors a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the future of the Pacific Islands.

In addition, from June 8 to 14, the NMP co-hosted a series of events and performances in collaboration with local institutions, including the University of Guam, the Guam Museum, the Ulitao seafaring group, and the City of Yona. As the first Taiwanese public museum to participate in the GMIF, the NMP reaffirms its commitment to promoting Taiwan’s Austronesian culture by deepening partnerships across Micronesia, the Pacific Ocean region, and Southeast Asia.
