Taiwan’s Hakka culture featured at Kultur Sommer Festival in Germany

The Ministry of Culture, along with the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany, the Public Libraries of Berlin (Verbund der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken Berlins, VÖBB), and the Schloss Britz, an architectural monument, worked in hand to participate in the Kultur Sommer Festival under the main theme of "Taiwan Tour." The festival wrapped up in early September and the last two stops of the "Taiwan Tour" included the Bezirkszentralbibliothek Pablo Neruda in Berlin and the Schloss Britz, featuring the themes of "Hakka" and "Paper Craft." To showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of Taiwan's oil-paper umbrellas and introduce the Hakka culture to the public, Hakka oil-paper umbrellas were displayed at the exhibition venue.

The Kultur Sommer Festival is an annual event that celebrates Berlin’s multifaceted cultural landscape. Held between June and September, the festival is made up of a variety of events including reading sessions, art exhibitions, music and art performances, workshops, and more. For this year's event, Taiwan specially integrated the elements of local venues into the works to showcase the different facets of Taiwanese paper artworks. In addition, a documentary titled "Hakka Renaissance S2: Liudui (客家文藝復興2-靚靚六堆)" produced by the National Geographic Channel was also broadcast to introduce how handmade paper is made in Taiwan.

On Sept. 2, the Hakka oil paper umbrellas were used as props by dancers as part of the modern dance, presenting the imagery of the Tung flower blossom at the Bezirkszentralbibliothek Pablo Neruda. On the following day, there were dance performances featuring traditional Nanguan and Beiguan music. It is worth mentioning that some of the materials of the dance costumes worn by the dancers were made using recycled paper of the sky lanterns.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany is committed to promoting Taiwan's traditional culture. Not only has the curation of visual and performing arts improved over the years, but the cultural division has also been promoting Taiwanese films on a regular basis as well as traditional cultural assets.
