Taiwanese writer Chi Ta-wei tours Spain to promote novel ‘Membranas’

Taiwanese writer Chi Ta-wei (紀大偉) embarked on a two-week book tour in Spain this June to promote his queer science fiction novel “The Membranes (膜),” newly translated and published in Spanish.

First published in 1995, “The Membranes” is a classic work in Taiwanese queer science fiction. It has been translated into multiple languages, including Japanese, English, French, Italian, Danish, and Swedish. The Spanish version, titled “Membranas,” debuted last February.

“Membranas” was translated by Alberto Poza, a Taiwanese culture enthusiast and teaching assistant at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Poza's research focuses on Sinophone LGBT literature, queer theory, and gender studies. The book was published by Egales, Spain’s first publishing house dedicated to LGBT literature, founded by Mili Hernandez, a prominent figure in Spain’s LGBT movement.

During his tour, Chi Ta-wei made several stops for author talks and events. In Madrid, he visited Berkana bookstore and Tipos Infames bookstore. In Barcelona, he hosted a literary workshop at the Open University of Catalonia and visited Gigamesh bookstore and Antinous bookstore. On June 8, he participated in the Madrid Book Fair for a book signing event.
