New York art house cinema launches Lee Ping-bing film exhibition

Supported by the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the Metrograph, an art house cinema in New York, launched the film exhibition titled “Daring Motion: The Films of Mark Lee Ping-bing (大膽運鏡:李屏賓的電影)” on Sept. 9. This exhibition features 12 films photographed by Lee Ping-bing (李屏賓), including “Dust in the Wind (戀戀風塵),” “Millennium Mambo (千禧曼波),” and “Norwegian Wood (挪威的森林).”

Best known for his long creative partnership with director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Taiwanese-born Mark Lee Ping-bing has long been established as one of the most formidable cinematographers in not only east Asia but the world.

On Aug. 7, Lee attended the screening of “Millennium Mambo” and participated in the Q&A session with the audience. He shared insights on how each generation develops its own filmmaking culture, emphasizing that he continues to adapt to new technologies in his craft.

Also present at the event were Director-General Lee Chih-chiang (李志強) of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (李安).
