Director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) attended the U.S. premiere of his latest release, the martial arts epic "The Assassin (刺客聶隱娘),” in New York on Oct. 16.

The film, which was one of the centerpiece selections of the 53rd New York Film Festival (NYFF), was touted as "immersive and ephemeral, sensuous and spare … Hou Hsiao-hsien's art is in the telling.”

Alongside "Steve Jobs” director Danny Boyle, the Taiwanese filmmaker discussed his cinematic influences with the NYFF, citing Godard to Naruse. The hour-long interview is available for free streaming through the SoundCloud link provided above.

Accompanied by dancer Sheu Fang-yi (許芳宜), who plays two pivotal roles in "The Assassin,” Hou also sat down for a Q&A session and reiterated his emphasis on realism.
