"Coin Boy (銅板少年),” a coming-of-age story by director Li Chuan-yang (李權洋), has captured the Halekulani Golden Orchid Award for Short Film at the 2016 Hawaii International Film Festival.
The 24-minute short follows Tai, a fourth grader whose family owns a claw machine business, as he accompanies his father in the rotation of collecting and replenishing coins. When he brings the exact coins to pay for school fees, his teacher asks him for bills instead, triggering shame and confusion.
The Shorts Jury, which watched a total of 42 short films from around the world to determine one winner, stated: "There were many standout shorts that made selecting a winner difficult, but ‘Coin Boy' best demonstrated the craft of filmmaking with its exceptional cast and quiet restraint in directing.”
