‘Craftsmanship x Diversification: Paths to Innovation’

How are classics refined from cultural heritage? How can diverse design concepts be incorporated into crafts for which artisanal techniques are a prerequisite? What can overturn the limitations of conventional operations and management models? When traditional crafts encounter modern life, these are the key questions that craftspeople face.

To address these issues, the Nantou-based National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute will stage an exhibition titled "Craftsmanship x Diversification: Paths to Innovation" to showcase the transformational stories of 20 Taiwanese crafts brands from Nov. 15, 2019 through April 19, 2020.

Crafts are the most reflective, sincere, and touching of all cultural expressions. Under changing times, industrial transitions, and rapid shifts in modern lifestyles, craftspeople are working to resolve the difficulties of preserving traditions amid contemporary lifestyles. On this land rich in nature and culture, they are injecting new ideas, transforming their works, and incorporating innovative methods.

From pursuing self-sufficiency by sourcing one's own materials to revolutionizing age-old techniques, using new technologies, and integrating innovative designs, they participate in cross-disciplinary collaborations and integrated marketing strategies, breaking through the stagnation in the crafts industry to welcome the energy that comes from the diverse demands of modern life.

"Craftsmanship x Diversification: Paths to Innovation" shall be presented through three curated paths — "New Paths in Branding," "Creating Time Loops," and "Road to Fashion." Visitors will be guided to understand the production environment of contemporary craftspeople in Taiwan. Moreover, the stories of these 20 crafts brands offer glimpses of their challenges in facing modern times.

Standing on this land on which they work hard and for which they have great affection, these craftspeople are like brightly colored bursts of fireworks, illuminating a path toward a sustainable future of craftsmanship and diversification.
