HOU NAMED BEST DIRECTOR BY CANNES

Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien has made a triumph return to the international silver screen with “The Assassin,” his first feature film in eight years that earned him the title of Best Director at the 68th Cannes Festival on May 24.


MIDI Z SECURES FUNDS FOR NEW FILM

A movie proposal by Taiwan-based filmmaker Midi Z has successfully attracted the interest of investors at 2015 L’Atelier, the business matchmaking segment of the Cannes Festival in France.


TAIWANESE SINGERS SET OFF FOR MIDEM

Taiwan will be represented by rapper Miss Ko, electro-pop group Magic Power, and visual rock band My Skin Against Your Skin at this year’s MIDEM in France, the leading business event of the global music ecosystem.


LONDON FEST ENDS ON TAIWANESE HEIST

The 2015 Chinese Visual Festival ended with the screening of Taiwanese film “Meeting Dr. Sun” in London on May 22. Directed by Yee Chih-yen, the 94-min production won wide recognition from British audiences and critics.


TAIWANESE CRAFTS TO DEBUT IN XI'AN FAIR

The NTCRI has organized a delegation to join the 2015 Silk Road Cultural and Creative Products Trade Fair in Xi’an in the hopes of introducing Taiwan’s top craft products to northern China and the Silk Road economic belt.


INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY IN TAIWAN

To mark International Museum Day on May 18, nearly 160 public and private museums have provided diverse activities and programs across Taiwan throughout the month of May to encourage people to experience the charm of museums.


THE HOLY CROSS SISTERS IN TAITUNG

A photography exhibition organized by the National Taitung Living Arts Center featuring more than 100 photos will present touching stories about the quiet dedication of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross in eastern Taiwan.


NOMINEES OF THE GOLDEN MELODY AWARDS

The nominees for this year’s Golden Melody Awards were announced on May 18, in which a total of 131 works will compete in 26 categories. The winners will be unveiled at an awards ceremony on June 27 at the Taipei Arena.


 SIX NEW 'NATIONAL LIVING TREASURES'

To honor six masters of traditional arts and crafts for their lifelong contributions to Taiwan’s cultural heritage, Culture Minister Hung Meng-chi formally bestowed them with the title of “National Living Treasures” at a May 23 ceremony.


OVERHAUL OF MOTION PICTURE ACT

The Legislative Yuan passed the amended Motion Picture Act on May 22. The overhaul is characterized by the Act’s transition from rigid control as dictated by the era of martial rule to a nurturing force in today’s democratic environment.
