ANG LEE FILMS TO BE SCREENED IN TEXAS

The Taiwan Academy in Houston, in conjunction with the East Asia Institute of the University of Texas at San Antonio, will co-host the screening of three award-winning films from Taiwanese director Ang Lee starting Feb. 27.


WU MING-YI TO SPEAK AT UC BERKELEY

Renowned Taiwanese writer and professor Wu Ming-yi has been invited to attend two seminars on issues relating to the global marine environment at the Berkeley branch of the University of California on Feb. 27 and 28.


TAIWAN'S LINEUP FOR THE OSAKA FILM FESTIVAL

Taiwanese films that will be screened at the Osaka Asian Film Festival, which will open with baseball flick 'Kano' and run from March 7 to 16, include police comedy 'Sweet Alibis' and Kinmen documentary 'Battle Spirit.'


LATE SCHOLAR REMEMBERED FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS

Yoshichika Iwasa, a Japanese anthropologist and Austronesian culture expert who donated nearly 30,000 pieces of artifacts to the National Museum of Prehistory, passed away on Feb. 17 at the age of 93.


PRESIDENT MA VISITS WEI-WU-YING ART CENTER

President Ma Ying-jeou visited the Wei-Wu-Ying Center for the Arts in Kaohsiung on Feb. 22 and lauded the progress of construction at the major cultural facility, saying that “only culture makes a nation truly great.”


‘OLD ART AND NEW CRAFTS’

To help present the development and history of Taiwanese craftsmanship, the Presidential Office will host a special four-month art exhibition from Feb. 8 through June 30. No advanced booking is required.


‘COMIC TIME’ FEATURING STUDENT ARTISTS

The exhibition, which will take place at the Songshan creative park on March 15 and 16, is part of a new talent-training program that was launched by the Ministry to foster and enhance the quality of the local comics industry.


‘EXPRESSION OF LINES’

Artist Lee Chen-cheng's solo exhibition, which is slated for Feb. 22 through April 27 in Taichung, includes brush calligraphy and sculptures made with materials such as stone, stainless steel, and copper.


‘FOLLOW THE LINES ON A JOURNEY’

An educational exhibition will run at the Taichung-based National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts from Feb. 22 through Nov. 9. It will be accompanied by guided tours, teacher’s workshops, and art seminars.


‘LIANG TAN-MEI’S SOLO EXHIBITION’

Chinese ink painter Liang Tan-mei, the eldest daughter of the late painter Liang Ting-ming, will hold a solo exhibition at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei from Feb. 21 through March 9.
