George Town Festival (GTF), one of Malaysia’s most iconic cultural events, will take place from Aug. 1 to 9 this year, featuring the “Isle to Isle” series presented by the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia.
With support from the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, Taiwanese artist Ping-Hsiang Wang and choreographer Chou Kuan Jou will appear at the SummerWorks Performance Festival in Toronto, Canada, which runs from Aug. 6 to 16.
The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, in partnership with Louisa Coffee USA, is hosting the joint exhibition “The Great Mother’s Dream: Metamorphosis as Power and Wisdom” from May 12 to Aug. 17.

The Ministry of Culture (MOC) launched the Creative Expo Taiwan 2026 at the Kong Zong Cultural Base in Taipei on July 31. The opening ceremony was officiated by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun and Minister of Culture Li Yuan.

The 2027 Taiwan Culture Base selection process is now open through Sept. 15. Organizations, groups, businesses, and individual studios that have never been selected and meet eligibility requirements are invited to apply.

The National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL), in collaboration with the U.K.’s National Centre for Writing (NCW), has opened applications for the 2026/27 Emerging Translator Mentorships program.
Cultural Features
Lai grew up in a rich musical environment surrounded by elders who loved to sing Hakka folk songs. His aunt ran a theater, and his uncle was a member of a traditional Hakka music ensemble. Watching theater performances and listening to Hakka music as part of daily life instilled in him a deep passion for traditional opera and music.

In 1624, the Dutch East India Company constructed a fortress named Fort Oranje on the western side of the Taijiang Inland Sea in Tayouan in southern Taiwan. Four years later, the fortress was later renamed Fort Zeelandia, which was the most important trading post for the Company in the 17th-century East Asia.
