Director Tsai Ming-liang to exhibit his works at Centre Pompidou in France

With the support of the Cultural Center of Taiwan in Paris, Taiwan-based Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮) will present an installation art and film retrospective exhibition titled "une quête (取經)" at the Centre Pompidou in France from Nov. 25, 2022, to Jan. 2, 2023.

This year, there will be 35 screenings, featuring 31 works directed by Tsai from 1989 to 2022, including drama films, short films, series and documentaries, and more. In addition to the screenings, 13 rounds of activities such as post-screening discussions will be held. This project was conceived and planned in 2018 by the Cultural Center of Taiwan in Paris and Centre Pompidou; however, it was postponed due to the pandemic.

The opening ceremony will be held on the evening of Nov. 25, with award-winning actor Lee Kang-sheng (李康生) and emerging actor Anong Houngheuangsy (亞儂.弘尚希) performing a live art show centered on "une quête." Following that, "Days," a drama film that won the Teddy Special Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020, will be screened as the opening film, making its debut in French theatres for the first time.

The concept of the exhibition is mainly based on paper, water, mirrors, and images, and the texture and beauty of images are shown through different materials. Nine films from the "Walker (行者)" series, Tsai's project which began in 2012, will be presented from multiple angles at the venue. It is worth mentioning that the ninth work of the Walker series was specially created for this exhibition. Sponsored by the Cultural Center of Taiwan in Paris and co-produced with the Public Television Service, the work was filmed in and around the Centre Pompidou.
