Taiwanese bamboo crafts join world fair in Korea

Unique handmade crafts fashioned with eco-friendly materials and Taiwanese aesthetics will be entered into the World Bamboo Fair 2015 in Damyang, South Korea this September.

The geographical and climatic conditions of Taiwan have given rise to a selection of high-quality bamboo species. Moreover, people on the island nation have historically relied on the bamboo plant for survival. From shelter to fuel, the pliable material was also weaved into vessels, furniture, mats, and carriers.

Now recognized as an efficient source of bioenergy, the humble bamboo has made the transition from an unremarkable agrarian resource to an eco-friendly and economically viable material. The international fair in Damyang, which will kick off a day ahead of World Bamboo Day, was established to raise such global awareness.

Taiwan's delegation to the World Bamboo Fair was organized by the Nantou-based National Taiwan Crafts Development and Research Institute (NTCRI), a subordinate organization of the Ministry of Culture that brings together artisans and designers to create bamboo crafts and accessories.
