Bamboo Weaver | Huang Tu-shan

Did You Know That ... ?

  • The veritable master of bamboo once said: "The first lesson of bamboo weaving is learning how to sit still. If you can't sit properly, how can you spend your whole day weaving?”

  • He himself started to learn the craft at age 14 from two Japanese artisans whose styles largely differed. Ikeda (池田) preached the importance of finesse and details, while Futagami (二神) extolled unrefined beauty. The two battling ideologies have influenced Huang in his creative process since.

  • Huang notes that his entire life has been touched or shaped by bamboo in some way, and he simply wishes to pass on the inheritance. 2013 National Crafts Achievement Award laureate Le Jung-lieh (李榮烈), is one of Huang's students.
