"The Beauty of Motifs in Taiwan Indigenous Culture,” an exhibition featuring decorative textiles and embroidery, will be held at the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo from April 7 through June 7.
Curated by the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines, the exhibition will display handcrafted relics, traditionally embroidered items, and posters that feature award-winning aboriginal textile art.
The museum will also bring its collection of the traditional "lukkus-kaxa (beaded shell cloth)” of the Atayal tribe, "alufu (shoulder bag)” of the Amis tribe, and embroidered appliqué of the Paiwan tribe to present their diverse cultures.
Shung Ye Museum is the first privately owned museum in Taiwan that promotes Taiwanese indigenous culture by collecting related cultural and historic relics and holding educational events.
Founded by Lin Ching-fu (林清富), a collector of aboriginal art pieces and relics since he was young, the museum currently houses 1,866 relics and 319 paintings. In addition to curating exhibitions and events, the museum also collaborates with academic institutions in Taiwan and overseas for research purposes.
Director Chu Wen-qing (朱文清) of the Taiwan Cultural Center noted that the museum enjoys close ties with Japan's National Museum of Ethnology. The exhibition will enhance Japan's understanding of Taiwan's aboriginal culture and allow Japanese exhibitiongoers to see the interpretation of traditional culture by younger indigenous generations, he added.
Shung Ye Museum Director Lin Wei-cheng (林威城) expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture for making the Tokyo exhibition possible. He also thanked the National Museum of Ethnology for its 10-year partnership with the Taipei museum in researching and exhibiting Taiwan's aboriginal culture.
