Floral Times – 2017 Taiwan Festival in Macau

"Taiwan Festival: Floral Time,” a 12-day event celebrating Taiwan's culture with the people of Macau, will kick off at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial House on April 6.


Co-organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Macau and the Ministry of Culture's Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre, the festival will offer a rich array of forums, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, and music concerts.


First off, the Sun Yat Sen Memorial House will be turned into an interactive exhibition venue to introduce Taiwan's rich and diverse picture books to Macau readers,


Titled "We All Love Picture Books,” the exhibition will offer in-depth insights into the cultures, memories, and everyday life of Taiwan through picture books that are not only suitable for children but enjoyable for adults as well.


In addition, award-winning picture book author Chang Hsiu-yu (張秀毓), bookstore owner Wang Yi-feng (王怡鳳), and up-and-coming illustrator Liao Shu-ti (廖書荻) will be invited be hosting forums and workshops during the 2017 Taiwan Festival in Macau.


Chang, whose works often encourage children to appreciate the beauty of nature, will deliver talks on Taiwan's indigenous cultures in his forum and hold a DIY workshop for children to make prints of their own stories.


As the first Taiwanese author to receive the prestigious Macmillan Prize for "Adventure at Night (探黑),” Liao will talk about picture books for adult readers and share her creative process. She also will be instructing participants to make their own picture books.


Wang, who founded the Kaohsiung-based indie bookshop Little House Books, is a storyteller who has been actively promoting children's literature and the habit of reading. She will deliver talks on challenging the perspective of homelands and cities through picture books.


Moreover, Taiwan's up-and-coming violinist Chen Yen-po (陳彥伯) will collaborate with storyteller Yen Liang-pei (顏良珮) to interpret war and peace through an interdisciplinary concert in Macau.


Taipei Philharmonic Chorus and Macao Orchestra will also jointly present two concerts titled "Concerto de Pascoa” to celebrate Easter on April 15 and 16 with Masses by Austrian composer Anton Bruckner.


The 2017 Taiwan Festival in Macau will be accompanied by a special film program showcasing Golden Horse Award winners from the Chinese-speaking community. More information on "Golden Horse Film Awards Focus Screening” can be found here.
