Auteur Tsai Ming-liang to hold masterclass in Hong Kong

Auteur Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮) will hold a masterclass in Hong Kong on March 22 via the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative, a platform initiated by the University of Hong Kong to nurture a dynamic documentary filmmaking scene in the Pearl of the Orient.

Tsai, 61, is a Malaysia-born filmmaker who has represented Taiwan on the world stage with his distinctive film aesthetics. As a master in the realm of slow cinema, Tsai has won numerous accolades, including the Golden Lion and the Fipresci Prize, at international film festivals. His artistic achievements have been recognized by Taiwan's highest cultural honor — the National Cultural Award — in 2017.

His 2009 release "Visage" not only became the first film to be included in the Louvre Museum's "Le Louvre s'offre aux cineastes" collection, but now serves as the benchmark for films venturing into the world of art galleries.

In recent years, Tsai has also produced creative works in the realms of installation art and virtual reality. Released in 2018, "The Deserted" is a 360-degree video featuring a man recuperating from an illness at a ruined apartment block in the mountains; his occasional companions are the ghost of a mother and a bride, and a kept fish.

Taiwan's Yang Li-chou (楊力州) is among previous directors who have participated in the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative's "Dialogue with Filmmakers" annual series.

"Dialogue with Tsai Ming-liang" will be held on March 22 at the University of Hong Kong. More information can be found at: http://www.hkdocumentary.com/dialogue-with-filmmakers-2019/
