Four award-winning Taiwanese short films to feature in SeaShorts Film Festival

Four Golden Harvest Awards short films from Taiwan are set to be screened online from Aug. 25 to Sep. 2, as part of the fifth annual edition of SeaShorts Film Festival (東南亞短片節) organized by SeaShorts Film Society (東南亞短片協會) with the support from Ministry of Culture and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia.

This year's edition will screen over 60 short films from various Southeast Asia countries, among which are four submissions from Taiwan that will be showcased in the "No Home Movies" section, with titles including "Remigrate (回流)," "Pulang (季候風)," "There (入世)," "Before And After (女兒牆)."

These four shorts explore the liminal spaces immigrants drift between, to pursue their aspirations in another country to achieve self-realization yet they struggle with their memories of the life that they have left behind.

Burma-Chinese director Hu Ching-chuan (胡鈞荃) applied 3D scanning technology into her film "Remigrate" to piece together her family background through herself and her memory of her Burma-Chinese mother; Taiwan-based Malaysian director Yam Kin Wai (嚴京威)'s work "Pulang" is to reflect on the experience of leaving home; "There," directed by Wu Yufen (吳郁芬), depicts the story of the Indonesian caregiver became the representative of family members in traditional funerals in Taiwan; "Before And After," directed by Han Hsiu-yu (韓修宇), depicts a foreign spouse's marriage experience in Taiwan.

The SeaShorts Film Festival is an annual celebration of Southeast Asian short film, comprising screenings, forums, workshops, exhibitions, and other creative endeavors from guests across the region. Founded by award-winning filmmaker Tan Chui-mui (陳翠梅) in 2017, it has grown into a permanent fixture on the calendars of cinema professionals and enthusiasts alike.
