Taiwanese artist Huang Po-chih launches solo exhibition 'Blue Elephant' in Austria

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany collaborated with Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien mumok (a museum in Vienna) to organize the solo exhibition "Blue Elephant (藍象)" by Taiwanese artist Huang Po-chih (黄博志), featuring works such as "Production Line: China Production Line - Made in China & Made in Taiwan (生產線:中國製造&台灣製造)," "Blue Skin: Mama's Story (藍色皮膚:老媽的故事)" and the video work "Seven People Crossing The Sea (七個在海上的人)” until Feb. 27.

The solo exhibition of Huang Po-chih is scheduled to be held at the same time as the well-known German artist Wolfgang Tillmans, who is ranked 46th in the 2021 Art Review Power 100, reflecting Huang’s artistic prestige and stature.

Director Karola Kraus of Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien was invited to Taiwan by the Ministry of Culture in 2018, and was astonished by the contemporary art scene in Taiwan. After communicating with Huang Po-chich, he was moved by the inspiration behind his works as well as their presentation, which prompted her to organize the exhibition.

Curator Heike Eipeldauer expressed her gratitude to the Ministry of Culture for its strong support, pointing out that it took two years for the exhibition to come to fruition because of the pandemic.

Upon its launching, the exhibition was reported by important media outlets such as Der Standard, Kurier, Salzburger Nachrichten, and the online contemporary art magazine e-flux. Francesca Gavin, an art writer from London, viewed the exhibition twice and was so moved that she wrote an introductory article, which was published on the website of Frieze, a professional magazine for contemporary art and culture.

Since its establishment in 2012, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany has been committed to expanding the cultural exchange network in German-speaking regions and Central and Eastern Europe and increasing the international visibility of Taiwanese artists. In addition to this collaborative effort with Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, it has also cooperated with important art and cultural institutions such as Martin-Gropius-Bau, Museum Villa Stuck Müchen, and OK Offenes Kulturhaus in Berlin, Germany in recent years to exhibit the works of Taiwanese artist.
