The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany and Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies jointly organize the Vienna Taiwan Film Weekend "Taiying – Taiwan Youth," which will be held at the Vienna's Admiral Theater for two consecutive days from Nov. 5 to 6.
The event on the 5th will begin with the feature documentary "Our Youth in Taiwan (我們的青春，在台灣)" directed by Fu Yue (傅榆) to discuss the civil disobedience triggered by the Sunflower Student Movement in Taiwan.
On the 6th, there will be screenings of Sung Hsin-yin's (宋欣穎) "On Happiness Road (幸福路上)," Huang Xi's (黃熙) "Missing Johnny (強尼凱克)," and Sylvia Chang Ai-chia's (張艾嘉) "Murmur of the Hearts (念念)" to introduce the audience to various aspects of Taiwan’s contemporary youth.
The Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies regularly organizes Taiwanese film exhibitions to exchange images in relation to Taiwan's history, culture, economy, and politics with Austria’s passionate Taiwan researchers.
The film "Our Youth in Taiwan" at the opening of this year's film weekend was the winner for Best Documentary at the 55th Golden Horse Awards in 2018 and the 20th Taipei Film Awards. The animation "On Happiness Road" won the Best Animation Feature Award at the 2018 Golden Horse Awards, the Grand Prize at the 2018 Tokyo Anime Awards, and the prize for Best Feature-length Animated Film at the 2018 Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film.
Established in 2009, the Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies is affiliated with the Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Vienna. Since 2009, the director Lipinsky has participated in 30 seminars around the world, and published several research papers on the state of human rights, cultural diversity, and feminism in Taiwan. Moreover, the Vienna Center has launched postgraduate courses enabling students to learn about Taiwan through literature, media, and films.
